Did you know? Eurasian Jay (Garrulus glandarius)

In the spotlight this week it’s our most colourful crow… the Eurasian Jay.

  • Ireland has it’s own sub species of jay (Garrulus glandarius hibernicus) which is genetically distinct to populations in Britain and mainland Europe.
  • A single jay buries several thousand acorns each autumn as a food cache, some of which they invariably forget… jays play an invaluable role in the distribution of our native oak trees.
  • Aggregations of Jays form “crow marriages” in spring, as birds come together to find mates.
