In the spotlight this week it’s our most colourful crow… the Eurasian Jay.
Did you know?:
- Ireland has it’s own sub species of jay (Garrulus glandarius hibernicus) which is genetically distinct to populations in Britain and mainland Europe.
- A single jay buries several thousand acorns each autumn as a food cache, some of which they invariably forget… jays play an invaluable role in the distribution of our native oak trees.
- Aggregations of Jays form “crow marriages” in spring, as birds come together to find mates.
