Citizen Science hits the beach with Coastwatch 2012

Coastwatch team seeks Citizen Scientists for shore survey

Coastwatch is an annual “Eco-Audit” of Ireland’s shoreline that relies on “Citizen Scientists” like you to submit records from all around the Irish coast.

2012 marks the survey’s 25th anniversary in Ireland, and takes place between 15 September and 15 October [I know this post is a bit late… oops… but there’s still plenty of time to get involved… CJ].

How do I take part in Coastwatch 2012?

It’s easy to get involved: just select stretch of shoreline approximately 500 metres long (dubbed a “survey unit” by the Coastwatch team) and walk it once around low tide, keeping your eyes peeled and filling out the Coastwatch Survey Questionnaire as you go.

Then just post your completed survey form back to Coastwatch, or submit your observations online via the Coastwatch website.

NB. Each 500m survey unit is measured based on the mean high tide mark, and spans the exposed area of seashore between from just above the highest tide mark down to the shallow water at low tide.

For full instructions, downloadable guidelines and survey forms visit the Coastwatch Survey page on the organisation’s website, and don’t forget to check out the updates on the Coastwatch Page on Facebook.
