IWDG to host European Cetacean Conference

Humpback whale off West Cork, IrelandEurope’s foremost cetacean conference is coming to Ireland in 2012.

Co-hosted by the The Irish Whale and Dolphin Group (IWDG) and the Galway Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT), the 26th annual European Cetacean Society Conference will take place over the the weekend of 24-25 March in the Galway Bay Hotel, with workshops being held at GMIT.

Registration for the conference is now open and offers a great opportunity to find out more about whales and dolphins, their conservation, the cetacean research being carried out in Europe and to meet the researchers who are working to uncover the mysteries of these most enigmatic of creatures.

The theme of this year’s conference is “Communication: Information and Ideas Worth Sharing”, and will explore communication between marine mammals, between species, between scientists and between scientist, policy-makers and the public.

“We have chosen this theme as we feel communication is fundamental to a conference which aims to share knowledge, experience, ideas and hypothesis,” say the organisers. “We also believe there are many ways of communicating, and a meeting of minds such as that at a conference lends itself to creating a space to receive new perspectives and viewpoints through a shared experience. We will bring a number of new innovations to this conference, some will be memorable, some might not work but all will seek to improve communication.”
